Why do Americans think Britons quotwould be talking German if it wasnt for usquot?

Question

Why do Americans think Britons quotwould be talking German if it wasnt for usquot?
After all they sat on their backsides for years before joining the war, eventually making it to our shores in . In that time the RAF had won the battle of Britain, in doing so cancelling the threat of Operation Sealion Hitlers planned invasion of Britain, secured Africa and were a few months into a campaign of mass bombers bombing German cities to induce firestorms. Sound like a country on her knees? No it does not! The brave men of the RAF saved Great Britain from invasion, not the yanks. They may have helped liberate France, but thats the only credit they should get. They didnt build the Spitfire though they did buy them, such was its brilliance. they also brought the engine it used to equip their mustangs nor the Hurricane, nor any of our Bombers we brought a few bs,didnt like them and stuck to our Lancasters so if anyone knows of a reason i should thank a yank over our brave airman, let me know.cheers

Answer

The irony is, that the reverse is true. One of the first debates to take place in Congress was whether to adopt German or English as the principle language in the new Republic. It was only the historically closer association with Britain and the number of settlers from these Islands that decided them to vote for English. In reality, America came far closer to speaking German than we ever have.brbrTo make one further point, American people tend not only to be ignorant of other cultures and even geographical insight, but also of their own history.
